The Monster Engine

While researching for our 3D character designs, the class was pointed towards Dave Devries’ the Monster Engine

I love his style of exaggerating small details in his characters, and in doing so creating an almost grotesque hyper realistic effect, while coming up with creative reasons for the characters’ odd proportions or lighting.

The thing I found most useful about Dave Devries’ sketches is the way he uses high contrast light and shade to fill in part of the original drawing where lines may be missing, and even enlarging dot eyes or stick limbs where necessary to suit the character
